Our family originates from Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Growing up, nature was our playground — weekends spent fishing or night snorkeling for lobsters. But as Malé grew, development consumed what little space remained.
We settled on Fulidhoo Island, reconnected with nature, and decided to share these experiences with travellers from around the world. In 2016, Luau Beach Inn was born.

Fulidhoo sits in the heart of Vaavu Atoll — one of the Maldives' most dramatic dive territories. Thilas, channels, overhangs, caves and open ocean. Grey reef sharks, mantas, whale sharks and turtles.
Anyone can rent you a tank. We're trying to give you the dive you'll remember in five years.
Industry-standard is 6-8. We cap at 4. More time at each cleaning station, more time framing the shot, more time spotting the small things.
The highest tier of PADI dive-center recognition. Listed on padi.com — verify us directly.
Plastic collected on the reefs is routed into Parley's recycling chain. Conservation isn't a tagline — it's a workflow.
Wake up, breakfast at the inn, walk to the boat. No transfer between resort and dive shop. More water time, less faffing.
Not seasonal hires. Local divers who learnt these channels as kids — they know where the manta is when it isn't where the manta is supposed to be.
University of Otago published a case study on us in Tourism Cases (2025) — independent recognition of how we work.
Shot in our atoll, on our dives. The arch at Fotheyo Cave. Grey reef sharks at Miyaru Kandu. Nurse sharks at Alimathaa. Schooling fusiliers, turtles on the reef, dolphins on the surface interval.

Vaavu is one of the Maldives' least-fished, least-crowded atolls. Most sites are 10-30 minutes by boat from Fulidhoo. Briefing covers the descent, current, key wildlife and the no-touch policy before you ever fin in.
Multi-chambered cave system on the outside drop-off. Soft corals, sweepers, the occasional whitetip resting under the overhang. The signature dive of Vaavu — book Advanced Open Water+ to dive this.
"Miyaru" means shark in Dhivehi. Channel dive with grey reef sharks patrolling the corner, schools of bigeye trevally, and occasional eagle ray flybys. Drift in with the incoming current.
One of the most famous night dives in the world. Nurse sharks (often 20+), stingrays, jacks — all converging under the resort jetty after dark. Surreal and unforgettable.
Channel mouth feeding into the atoll. Grey reef sharks at the corner, dogtooth tuna hunting at depth, healthy hard coral garden on top. Currents can pick up — typically run as a drift.
UNESCO biosphere reserve. Pelagic territory — eagle rays in formation, manta sightings June-November, the rare hammerhead at dawn. Longer boat ride, worth every minute.
The outside reef of Fotheyo. Wall plunges into the blue, soft corals on the overhang, schooling jacks. Often paired with the cave dive on the same day.
Our home reef. Used as a check-out dive for all guests new to us, and a quiet sunset dive for the rest. Turtles, octopus, lionfish, and the resident moray under the coral head.
Site selection depends on weather, tide and group certification. Daily picks confirmed at the briefing the evening before.
Every Vaavu dive site, marine-life month-by-month calendar, PADI course rates, and the six things we do differently. The same brief we hand new guests at the dive shop.
Best chances for headline sightings. Reef sharks, turtles, jacks, snappers and morays are present year-round — these are the seasonal highlights you'd plan a trip around.

The reefs we dive are the same ones our family fishes, our kids swim in, and our future depends on. Conservation isn't a brochure line — it's a workflow built into every dive.
Plastic collected on Fulidhoo reefs is routed into Parley's recycling chain. Our boats run plastic-free.
No riding turtles. No touching mantas. No grabbing coral for a stable photo. We brief at length and dive guides intervene. Visibly.
Discarded fishing nets snag turtles and shred coral. When we find them on a dive, we surface them. Guests are welcome to assist.
Bleaching events, coral recovery, manta visits — we log what we see. Long-term data on our home reefs, available to researchers.

In 2025, the University of Otago published a case study on Luau Beach Inn — analysing how a family-run guesthouse on a small Maldivian island built a real competitive advantage in one of the world's most saturated tourism markets. The framework: Blue Ocean Strategy. The principle: stop competing where everyone else is fighting. This page is the short version.
Most Fulidhoo guesthouses chase the same budget traveller with the same product. We picked a different game. Here's the short version of the Otago analysis.
When every guesthouse around you fights for the cheapest room, going lower is a race to zero. We chose the opposite: upgraded the building, hired skilled chefs, raised our standards, and positioned Luau as a boutique-luxury guesthouse. You pay for the experience, not the postcode.
Daily sheet changes and plastic water bottles in every room. Hilton stopped doing it. So did we. Sheets changed every third day (or on request), water from refillable stations instead of single-use plastic. Lower waste, lower cost, same comfort.
Accessibility. A lift, ramps, and wheelchair-accessible rooms in a Maldivian guesthouse. Rare even in 5-star resorts. Travellers with mobility needs have a Maldives most of the country still can't offer them.
One-stop. Every diving, dining, watersports, fishing, and excursion need handled by us — under one roof, by the same family. You don't get re-routed to a third party for the experiences you came for.
We grew up in Malé, fascinated by the sea life around us. As Malé filled with concrete and the beach disappeared, we moved to Fulidhoo and built Luau Beach Inn — opening in 2016 with just four rooms.
Today there are 14 rooms, but the rest is unchanged. Four brothers, our parents, and our partners run the inn end-to-end. We're the same people you eat dinner with, dive with, and go night-fishing with — because that's how we wanted to share Fulidhoo when we built this place, and that's how it still works.
— featured in the University of Otago case study, Shaheer, I. (2025), Tourism Cases
The Maldives discards 280,000 plastic bottles a day in Malé alone. We don't have a single plastic water bottle on the property.
Yours to keep. Refill at stations across the property and on the dive boats.
Plastic collected on Fulidhoo is recycled with Parley. Marine conservation funded through the dive school.
Sheets changed every third day or whenever you ask. Less laundry water + chemicals per stay.
A lift between floors. Ramps where you'd normally hit a step. Wheelchair-accessible rooms with roll-in showers. We didn't add accessibility because regulations required it. We added it because the Maldives barely offers it — and people with mobility needs deserve the same sandbank, the same reef, the same family table.
If you're travelling with a wheelchair or limited mobility, message us before you book — we'll walk you through every detail of getting to Fulidhoo, around the property, and onto the boat.
No middlemen, no commission, just us.
PADI Open Water Diver at Divers Lodge Fulidhoo — our own 5-Star centre on Vaavu Atoll. Pool, theory, four boat dives in some of the most untouched reefs in the Indian Ocean.
Industry standard is 6–8. We cap at 4. More attention per skill, less waiting, less panic on the first descent.
Highest tier of PADI recognition. Listed on padi.com. Your certification is valid worldwide.
Wake up, breakfast at the inn, walk to the boat. No transfer between dive shop and hotel.
Your instructor learnt these reefs as a kid. Not seasonal hires.

A lift between floors. Ramps where you'd usually hit a step. Wheelchair-accessible rooms with roll-in showers. Step-free path to the beach. Rare even in 5-star resorts.
In a 14-room Maldivian guesthouse this is genuinely unusual. Every floor reachable without stairs.
Wider doors. Roll-in showers. Lower-positioned amenities. Grab bars where they need to be.

In 2023, Luau Beach Inn was awarded the PROMISE Sustainability Award by SwitchAsia — an EU-funded programme working with small businesses across Asia to cut single-use plastic and reduce waste.
We were one of the first guesthouses in the Maldives to eliminate plastic water bottles from the property entirely. Every guest receives a stainless steel bottle on arrival. Water stations across the property. Recycling routed through Parley for the Oceans.
According to the World Bank, 280,000 plastic bottles are discarded daily in the Maldivian capital Malé. The award recognises practical contributions to that number going down.
Selected coverage of Luau Beach Inn from independent journalists and trade publications.
Feature on Luau's energy-saving technologies and recycling work: beach bags made from recycled sail material via Sail Factory, refillable water stations served by an RO water plant, solar panel rollout in progress, plus community ocean clean-ups and awareness sessions at Fulidhoo School.
A peer-reviewed case study mapping how Luau Beach Inn created differentiation in the saturated Maldivian guesthouse sector using Kim & Mauborgne's Blue Ocean Strategy framework — eliminating price competition, reducing housekeeping waste, raising sustainability and guest experience standards, and creating two factors that almost no Fulidhoo competitor offers: accessibility (lift + wheelchair access) and a one-stop guesthouse model.
The paper covers Luau's family ownership, sustainability initiatives (including the Parley for the Oceans partnership), the PADI 5-Star Dive Center, and the strategic decision to position as boutique-luxury rather than budget accommodation.
Divers Lodge Fulidhoo, the on-site dive school, holds PADI 5-Star status — the highest tier of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors' rating system.

Our family originates from Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Growing up, nature was our playground — weekends spent fishing or night snorkeling for lobsters. But as Malé grew, development consumed what little space remained for nature and beaches.
